Grah Gochar January 2027: Dates and 12 Rashi Effects

The major highlight of January 2027 is Jupiter's return to its sign of exaltation. On 25 January Jupiter, retrograde, moves back from Leo into Cancer, where it is at its strongest. Earlier in the month the Sun enters Capricorn (Makar Sankranti), ending Kharmas, and Mars turns retrograde in Leo for nearly three months. This page covers the major planetary transits (grah gochar) in January 2027, with dates from NavAstro's chart engine, what each one means, and the effect on all 12 rashis.

Makar Sankranti: the Sun enters Capricorn (14โ€“15 January)

The Sun enters Capricorn (Makar) at about 9:15 pm IST on 14 January 2027. Because this is after sunset, the Sankranti's punya kaal, and the festival, fall on Friday 15 January, beginning at local sunrise; the exact timings depend on your city's sunrise and the panchang you follow. In the traditional Hindu calendar, Makar Sankranti marks the start of Uttarayan, the Sun's northward course (astronomically, the Sun's turn north begins at the December solstice), and the end of Kharmas, after which weddings, griha pravesh and other auspicious beginnings are traditionally resumed.

The Sun stays in Capricorn until 13 February. In Saturn's sign it favours discipline, hard work and dealing with institutions. Find your city's punya kaal on the Panchang page.

Mars turns retrograde in Leo (10 January)

Mars has been in Leo since 12 November. On 10 January it turns retrograde at about 16ยฐ11' Leo. It moves back into Cancer, its sign of debilitation, on 9 March, turns direct there on 1 April, and returns to Leo only on 26 April. Mars therefore spends an unusually long time around these two signs.

Traditionally, retrograde Mars is a time to finish, review and repair rather than start: astrologers usually advise beginning property deals and big physical projects after it turns direct. Energy turns inward; frustration and impatience are common, especially for Singh, Kumbh and Vrishchik rashis, where Mars falls in the 1st, 7th and 10th houses from the Moon.

Jupiter returns to Cancer (25 January)

Jupiter entered Leo on 31 October 2026 and turned retrograde there on 13 December. On 25 January it moves back into Cancer (Kark), the sign of its exaltation, and turns direct there on 13 April. It finally leaves Cancer for Leo on 26 June 2027.

Jupiter in Cancer is one of the best positions it can hold: generous, protective and wise. Expect support for family, education, children, finances and faith, especially for the rashis where it falls in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th house from the Moon (see the table). In Cancer, Jupiter shares the sign with Ketu, with Rahu in the opposite sign, Capricorn: a sign-level Jupiterโ€“Ketu association that is traditionally read as giving a more spiritual, inward turn to Jupiter's blessings. They are not together by degree when Jupiter arrives; the two meet exactly on 1 March (about 25ยฐ27' Cancer) and again on 20 April 2027 (about 22ยฐ50').

Venus in Scorpio and Sagittarius

Venus leaves its own sign, Libra, late on 1 January and moves into Scorpio, where it brings intensity and depth to relationships and finances. On 29 January it enters Sagittarius. Venus is direct and not combust all month, so once Kharmas is over the second half of January can offer wedding muhurats; each date still has to be checked in the panchang. See Venus and Marriage Timing.

Mercury in Capricorn and Aquarius

Mercury enters Capricorn on 10 January, which suits planning, budgeting and formal communication, and Aquarius on 28 January, which favours networks, technology and new ideas. By the usual 14ยฐ rule Mercury has been combust since about 7 December, and its combustion ends around 23 January. In the sky, its last morning sighting was around 13 December, and it is seen again in the evening sky from around 18โ€“19 January. The calculated combustion and the actual visibility use different criteria, so their dates need not coincide. Mercury slows down towards the end of the month and turns retrograde on 9 February.

What it means for each rashi

Transits are read by house from your Moon sign. The table shows the house Jupiter (in Cancer from 25 Jan) and the Sun (in Capricorn from 14 Jan) occupy for each rashi. These placements apply from those dates: earlier in the month, the Sun is still in Sagittarius and Jupiter in Leo. Jupiter gives good results in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th houses from the Moon; the Sun in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th. A โœ“ marks a favourable house.

Rashi Jupiter in Cancer Sun in Capricorn Short reading
Mesh 4th 10th โœ“ Career recognition; home matters need attention
Vrishabh 3rd 9th Effort over luck this month; avoid disputes with elders
Mithun 2nd โœ“ 8th Jupiter boosts money and family; careful with risks
Kark 1st 7th Jupiter on your sign: wisdom and protection; partnerships need patience
Singh 12th 6th โœ“ Jupiter leaves your sign: spending on good causes; the Sun helps you win
Kanya 11th โœ“ 5th Gains and wishes fulfilled; think before speculating
Tula 10th 4th Career responsibilities grow; keep home life calm
Vrishchik 9th โœ“ 3rd โœ“ Luck and effort both supported by these transits

When does Jupiter enter Cancer in 2027? Jupiter moves back into Cancer, its sign of exaltation, on 25 January 2027 (while retrograde). It turns direct there on 13 April and moves into Leo on 26 June 2027.

When does Kharmas end in January 2027? With Makar Sankranti: the Sun enters Capricorn on the night of 14 January 2027, so weddings and other muhurats can be considered again from 15 January (each date still needs checking in the panchang).

Is January 2027 good for marriage? The second half may offer wedding muhurats: Kharmas ends on 15 January, and Venus and Jupiter are both free of combustion. That doesn't make every date suitable: each still has to pass the local panchang's tithi, nakshatra and other muhurat rules, and Jupiter and Mars are retrograde. Check your city's dates in the Muhurat Finder and your own chart with the Marriage Timing calculator.

Which rashis benefit most in January 2027? From these transits, Vrishchik (Jupiter in the 9th, the Sun in the 3rd) and Meen (Jupiter in the 5th, the Sun in the 11th) are supported by both planets. Mithun (2nd), Kanya (11th) and Makar (7th, helpful for marriage) are helped by Jupiter; Mesh (10th) and Singh (6th) by the Sun. Other planets and your own dasha can change the picture.
