How yogas are read
A yoga is a specific combination of planets that classical texts link to a result. The ones checked here are the most widely used:
- Pancha Mahapurusha: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) gives Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya or Sasa yoga.
- Raja yogas: a lord of a kendra connected with a lord of a trikona (1st, 5th or 9th house) by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange. When the 9th and 10th lords join, it is Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga, the strongest of them.
- Dhana yogas: the lords of wealth (2nd and 11th) connected with the trikona lords.
- Moon and Sun yogas: planets around the Moon (Sunapha, Anapha, Durudhara) or the Sun (Vesi, Vasi, Ubhayachari), Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon (Gaja Kesari).
- Viparita Raja: the lords of the difficult houses (6th, 8th, 12th) placed in difficult houses, which turns trouble into gain.
- Doshas: Kemadruma, Shakata, Kala Sarpa, Guru Chandal and Grahan. Each is listed with its common cancellations.
Houses are counted whole-sign from the Lagna, as in our Kundli. Manglik dosha has its own detailed Manglik check. Read more in yogas in kundli.
Frequently asked questions
What is a yoga in Vedic astrology?
A yoga is a specific combination of planets: by sign, house, conjunction, aspect or the lordship of houses. Classical texts list hundreds; each promises a particular result, such as status (Raja yoga), wealth (Dhana yoga) or difficulty (a dosha).
Does having a Raja yoga guarantee success?
No. A yoga shows a potential. It gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it, and only as strongly as those planets are placed: a yoga made of weak or afflicted planets gives modest results.
Which yogas does this calculator check?
About 30 of the most used: the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, Gaja Kesari, Budhaditya, Chandra-Mangala, Sunapha, Anapha, Durudhara, Adhi, Amala, Lakshmi, Raja and Dhana yogas, Dharma-Karmadhipati, Parivartana, the three Viparita Raja yogas, Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga, and the Kemadruma, Shakata, Kala Sarpa, Guru Chandal and Grahan doshas.
Why does another website show different yogas?
Yoga definitions differ between texts and software: some count houses from the Moon as well as the Lagna, some use exact degrees instead of whole signs, and some list many more minor yogas. We follow the common textbook rules with whole-sign houses and explain the reason for every result.
Is Kala Sarpa or Kemadruma dosha dangerous?
No dosha decides a life on its own. They describe tendencies, are often cancelled by other factors, and are weighed together with the whole chart and the running dasha.
