How Manglik dosha is checked

Mars is the planet of energy, courage and heat. When it sits in a house connected with marriage and home life, tradition says that heat can show up as friction, impatience or delay in married life. That is Manglik dosha, also called Mangal or Kuja dosha.

  • The houses: the 1st (self), 4th (home), 7th (spouse), 8th (longevity of marriage) and 12th (bed comforts), as in the classical verse. Mars in the 7th or 8th is usually taken as the strongest. Some South Indian traditions also count the 2nd (family); we note it but don't count it.
  • The reference points: houses are counted from the Lagna and from the Moon. Some South Indian traditions also count from Venus; we show it, but the verdict uses the Lagna and the Moon, the same rule as our Kundli matching.
  • Mild or strong: from one reference point only, the dosha is usually treated as mild (anshik, "low"). From both the Lagna and the Moon it is full ("high"). Other calculators may differ: some check only the Lagna, some add the 2nd house.
  • Cancellations: many charts meet at least one traditional cancellation, and when both partners are Manglik the doshas balance. Read more in the 7th house and marriage.

Manglik dosha is one factor among many. It doesn't decide whether a marriage will be happy; the full charts, the dashas and the Guna Milan matter more. Use it as a prompt to look more closely, not as a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

What is Manglik dosha?

Manglik (Mangal or Kuja) dosha is when Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart. Mars there is traditionally said to bring heat and friction into married life, so it is checked before marriage. Some South Indian traditions also count the 2nd house.

From where is Manglik dosha checked?

From the Lagna (ascendant) and from the Moon sign; some South Indian traditions also check from Venus. This checker counts the Lagna and the Moon, the same rule our Kundli matching uses, and shows Venus separately.

What is mild or Anshik Manglik?

When the dosha comes from only one reference (the Lagna or the Moon, not both), it is usually treated as mild (low). From both it is full (high). Many astrologers give the mild form little weight in matching.

Can Manglik dosha be cancelled?

Yes. Commonly cited cancellations include Mars in its own or exaltation sign, certain house-and-sign combinations, Jupiter joining or aspecting Mars, and Jupiter or Venus in the Lagna. When both partners are Manglik, the dosha is traditionally considered balanced.

Does Manglik dosha end at age 28?

That is a popular belief, not a rule from the classical texts. Astrologers judge Mars from the whole chart, the dashas and the partner's chart rather than an age.

Should a Manglik marry only a Manglik?

It is a common traditional recommendation, because the two doshas balance each other. It is one factor among many: the full charts, the Guna Milan and the dashas matter more. Compare two charts with the Kundli matching calculator.
