Venus (Shukra) is the natural significator, or karaka, of marriage in Vedic astrology. Whatever your Lagna, and whichever planet rules your 7th house, Venus always speaks for love, attraction, romance, comfort and partnership. That makes it one of the first planets an astrologer checks for marriage, and one of the most useful for timing it.
Why Venus matters for marriage
- Karaka of the spouse. In a man's chart Venus traditionally represents the wife. In every chart it shows the capacity for love and partnership.
- Karaka of pleasure and comfort. Venus rules beauty, art, luxury and the pleasures of married life.
- A timing planet. Venus dashas and transits over or to Venus are classic marriage triggers.
In a woman's chart, Jupiter is traditionally read as the significator of the husband, but Venus still shows the quality of love and relationships.
How to judge the strength of Venus
| Condition | What it means |
|---|---|
| Own sign (Taurus, Libra) | Strong; love and partnership come naturally. |
| Exalted (Pisces) | Very strong; devotion and refinement in relationships. |
| Debilitated (Virgo) | Weaker; can show high standards, criticism or delays, unless the debility is cancelled (Neecha Bhanga). |
| Combust (very close to the Sun) | Venus loses some of its strength; ego or duty can overshadow romance. |
| With or aspected by Jupiter | Protected and blessed; a good sign for marriage. |
| With or aspected by Saturn | Delay or seriousness; a mature, lasting bond once it comes. |
| With Mars | Strong attraction and passion; can also bring impulsiveness. |
| With Rahu | Unconventional attractions; intense or unusual relationships. |
Also look at the house Venus is in. Venus in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) generally gives good results, while Venus in the 6th, 8th or 12th can bring complications, though the 12th is also called a good place for Venus because it rules bed pleasures and comfort.
Finally, check Venus in the Navamsa (D9) chart. A Venus that is weak in the main chart but well placed in the D9 often gives a good marriage.
Venus and marriage timing
Venus Mahadasha and Antardasha
The Venus Mahadasha lasts 20 years, the longest in the Vimshottari system. Within any Mahadasha, the Venus Antardasha is a common time for marriage, especially when Venus is also connected to the 7th house or its lord. If Venus rules your 7th house (for Aries and Scorpio Lagnas, where the 7th sign is Libra or Taurus), its periods become even stronger for marriage. See Dasha Periods That Bring Marriage.
Jupiter transiting over Venus
When Jupiter transits over natal Venus, or aspects it with its 5th, 7th or 9th aspect, Venus's promise is "expanded". Many Nadi-style timing rules use exactly this transit. Read more in How Jupiter's Transit Triggers Marriage.
Venus's own transit
Venus moves fast (roughly a month per sign), so its own transit is used to pick the month or week, not the year. Venus transiting the 7th house or over the 7th lord during an already strong period is a fine-timing confirmation.
Venus and late marriage
When Venus is afflicted, especially by Saturn's conjunction or aspect, marriage is often delayed. The same is true when Venus is combust or debilitated without cancellation. Delay is not denial, though: such charts frequently show a stable marriage once the right dasha arrives. See Late Marriage in Kundli.
Frequently asked questions
Is a debilitated Venus bad for marriage? Not necessarily. Check for cancellation of debility (Neecha Bhanga), the Navamsa placement and Jupiter's aspect. Many people with a debilitated Venus have good marriages.
Does Venus Mahadasha always bring marriage? No. It brings Venus themes (comfort, relationships, luxury, art), but marriage also needs the 7th house and transits to agree, and you need to be of the right age and circumstances.
Which is more important, Venus or the 7th lord? Both. The 7th lord shows marriage specifically in your chart; Venus is the universal karaka. Astrologers read them together.
