What KP astrology adds to the Kundli
KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) keeps the planets, nakshatras and Vimshottari dasha of Vedic astrology, but reads them more finely. Every planet and every house cusp gets three lords: the lord of its sign, of its nakshatra (the star lord) and of its sub, one of nine unequal parts of the nakshatra. The star lord shows what a planet will give; the sub lord decides whether it actually happens.
How to read your KP chart
- Cusp sub lords: in KP each house cusp has a sub lord, and the houses that sub lord signifies through its star lord are what KP astrologers study for that house's matters.
- Significators: the planets listed for a house are the ones whose dashas and bhuktis bring its results, A being the strongest.
- 4-step analysis: before a planet's dasha starts, read its four steps to see which houses it will activate.
- Ruling planets: the planets common to the ruling planets and a matter's significators are the ones KP uses to time it.
This chart uses Placidus cusps and the Krishnamurti ayanamsa, as KP is practised. Compare with your regular Kundli and its Vimshottari dasha.
Frequently asked questions
What is KP astrology?
KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) is a system of Vedic astrology worked out by Prof. K. S. Krishnamurti in the 1960s. It keeps the nakshatras and the Vimshottari dasha, but reads every planet and house cusp through three lords: the lord of its sign, of its nakshatra (star lord) and of its sub, a finer division of the nakshatra. KP says the star lord shows what a planet will bring and the sub lord whether it will actually happen.
What is a sub lord?
Each nakshatra of 13°20′ is divided into nine unequal parts, one for each Vimshottari dasha lord, in proportion to its dasha years and starting from the nakshatra's own lord. With the splits at sign boundaries there are 249 subs in the zodiac. The lord of the sub a planet or cusp falls in is its sub lord; dividing a sub the same way again gives the sub-sub lord.
Why does KP use different house cusps?
KP uses Placidus houses, where each cusp falls at its own degree and the houses have unequal sizes, instead of whole signs. A planet's house is the one between its cusps, so it can fall in a different house than in the usual Kundli. The cusps change every few minutes, which is why KP needs an exact birth time.
What is the 4-step theory?
For each planet the houses it signifies are read in four steps: the planet itself (the house it occupies and the houses it owns), its star lord, its sub lord, and the star lord of its sub lord. Together they show what the planet's dasha or bhukti can deliver and whether the result comes.
What are ruling planets?
The planets ruling the moment of judgement: the lord of the weekday, the sign, star and sub lords of the rising degree (Lagna) and of the Moon. KP uses them to confirm significators and to time events; this page shows them for now, at the birth place.
Which ayanamsa does this KP chart use?
KP New (Krishnamurti VP291) by default, about 4′36″ smaller than the official Lahiri, as most current KP software uses; KP Old, the original Krishnamurti value (about 5′49″ smaller than Lahiri), can be chosen on the form. The KP ayanamsa is used only on this page; the rest of NavAstro keeps the Lahiri ayanamsa you choose.
