How your exact age is worked out

Age is counted in completed units. First the full years since your birth, then the full months since your last birthday, then the days since your last monthly anniversary. Born on 2 January 2009, you are 17 years, 9 months and 30 days old on 1 November 2026: 17 birthdays have passed, the 2nd of the month has come round 9 times since the last one, and 30 days have gone by since 2 October.

Months have different lengths, and that is handled for you. If you were born on the 31st, you complete a month on the last day of shorter months. A 29 February birthday is counted on 28 February in other years.

Age as on a cut-off date

Exam notices, school admissions, job forms and pension schemes often ask for your age as on a fixed date rather than today. Set the Age on field to that date and the calculator shows your completed age on that day, ready to copy into the form.

The weekday you were born, and its planet

In the Indian week every day (vaar) is ruled by a planet: Ravivar by the Sun, Somvar by the Moon, Mangalvar by Mars, Budhvar by Mercury, Guruvar by Jupiter, Shukravar by Venus and Shanivar by Saturn. The calculator tells you your birth weekday and its ruler, along with your Mulank and Bhagyank from numerology.

Milestones worth marking

  • 10,000 days: a little over 27 years and 4 months; a modern milestone many people like to celebrate.
  • Shashti Poorti: the 60th birthday, when the 60-year cycle of the Hindu calendar returns to your birth year.
  • Sahasra Chandra Darshan: having seen a thousand full moons, at about 80 years and 10 months.

For good dates to hold a puja or celebration, use the muhurat finder or the day's panchang.

Frequently asked questions

How is exact age calculated?

Count the completed years from your birthday, then the completed months since your last birthday, then the days since the last monthly anniversary. Leap years and short months are handled automatically: someone born on 31 January completes a month on the last day of February.

How do I find my age as on a cut-off date?

Change the 'Age on' date to the cut-off date in the notice, for example 1 August of the exam year, and the calculator shows your completed age on that day.

What if I was born on 29 February?

In years without 29 February, this calculator counts your birthday on 28 February. Some forms use 1 March instead, so check the rule that applies to you.

What is Shashti Poorti?

Shashti Poorti is the celebration of a person's 60th birthday, when the 60-year cycle of the Hindu calendar comes back to the year of birth. It is traditionally marked with a puja and a renewal of wedding vows.

What is Sahasra Chandra Darshan?

It celebrates having seen a thousand full moons, which comes at about 80 years and 10 months of age. The date shown is an estimate from the average length of a lunar month; the exact day depends on the panchang used.

Is my date of birth stored?

No. The age is calculated on the spot and nothing you enter is stored on our server.
