How your name number is found

Each letter carries a number. Add up the letters of the name you use every day, then keep adding the digits of the total until a single digit is left: that is your name number, also called the expression or destiny number. The calculator shows every step, so you can check it by hand.

The Chaldean system leaves 9 out of the alphabet, and the letters follow sound rather than order. The Pythagorean system simply counts the alphabet 1 to 9 and keeps 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers.

Cheiro vs Chaldean

Cheiro took the Chaldean letter values, so both give the same name number. The difference is the compound number, the total before it is reduced. Cheiro read every compound from 10 to 52 as fortunate (such as 19, 23 and 27), mixed (such as 13 and 30) or a warning (such as 16, 26 and 29). Pick Cheiro to see that reading: a name only counts as lucky when its compound is not a warning, and the lucky spellings put fortunate compounds first. Pick Chaldean for the single number alone.

What makes a name lucky for you

A name number is not good or bad on its own; it depends on your birth date. Two numbers come from it: the Mulank (your birth day reduced to one digit) and the Bhagyank (your whole date of birth reduced). A name number that is friendly to both is lucky. One that is an enemy of either is best avoided. Everything else is neutral. Your Mulank, Bhagyank and Lo Shu grid are also on the mobile numerology page.

  • 1 (Sun): Drive and independence. A name for people who lead, start things and like to stand on their own.
  • 2 (Moon): Tact and feeling. A gentle, cooperative name that works well in partnerships and caring roles.
  • 3 (Jupiter): Expression and learning. Good for teaching, writing, advising and anything that needs words.
  • 4 (Rahu): Method and hard work, with sudden turns. Steady effort pays, but plans can change without warning.
  • 5 (Mercury): Movement and quick wit. Good for business, trade, travel and communication; one of the luckiest name numbers.
  • 6 (Venus): Charm and comfort. Linked to beauty, art, home and harmony in relationships.
  • 7 (Ketu): Depth and inner search. Suits research, spiritual work and people who think before they speak.
  • 8 (Saturn): Patience and endurance. Success tends to come late, after steady and serious effort.
  • 9 (Mars): Energy and courage. Gives the push to fight for a cause; can also make a person quick to anger.

Changing the spelling, not the name

Most people who follow name numerology keep their name and adjust the spelling: a doubled vowel (Akash to Aakash), an added h (Nikita to Nikhita), a long vowel (Preeti for Priti) or a final a. The calculator tries these natural changes on your first name, one or two at a time, and lists only those that land on a lucky number for your birth date. Use the new spelling where it counts for you: your signature, social media, a business card. A legal change is a bigger step and a personal choice.

Frequently asked questions

How is a name number calculated?

Every letter has a number. Add the numbers of all the letters in the name you use, then add the digits of the total until one digit is left. For Rohan in the Chaldean system: R 2 + O 7 + H 5 + A 1 + N 5 = 20, and 2 + 0 = 2.

Cheiro, Chaldean or Pythagorean: which should I use?

Cheiro and Chaldean use the same letter values, so they give the same name number. Cheiro also reads the compound number, the total before it is reduced, as fortunate, mixed or a warning; most Indian numerologists follow him. Pythagorean numbers the alphabet 1 to 9 in order and is more common in Western books. Pick one system and stay with it.

What is a compound number?

The total of the letters before it is reduced to one digit, such as 23 for a name that adds up to 23 and reduces to 5. Cheiro gave meanings to the compounds from 10 to 52. Two names with the same single number can have very different compounds, so in the Cheiro system a name is only called lucky when its compound is not a warning.

What makes a name lucky for me?

A name whose number is friendly to both your Mulank (from your birth day) and your Bhagyank (from your full date of birth). A name number that is an enemy of either is treated as unlucky; anything else is neutral.

Should I use my full name or my first name?

Use the name you actually sign and are called by. The calculator shows the number of each word and of the full name, so you can compare both.

Do I have to change my name legally?

No. Most people only change the spelling they use day to day, on social media or in a signature, such as Akash to Aakash. A legal change is a bigger decision and is up to you.

Is my data saved?

No. The name and date are calculated on the spot and nothing is stored on our server.
