What is Shani Sade Sati?

Saturn takes about 29½ years to go round the zodiac, spending roughly 2½ years in each sign. Sade Sati is the 7½ years it spends in the sign before your Moon sign, on it, and in the sign after. Because the Moon stands for the mind, this long transit is read as a time of pressure, responsibility and maturing.

  • Rising phase (12th from the Moon): expenses, travel, sleep and a sense of restlessness.
  • Peak phase (over the Moon): the most demanding stretch for the mind, health and duties; hard work counts most here.
  • Setting phase (2nd from the Moon): money, family and speech, as the pressure gradually lifts.

Shani Dhaiya (Small Panoti) is Saturn's 2½ years in the 4th sign from the Moon (Kantaka Shani) or the 8th (Ashtama Shani). How strongly any of these is felt depends on Saturn in your own birth chart, your running dasha and your Ashtakavarga scores.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sade Sati?

Sade Sati (“seven and a half”) is the roughly 7½-year period when Saturn moves through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself and the sign after it. Saturn spends about 2½ years in each sign, so it comes three times in an average lifetime.

What are the three phases of Sade Sati?

Rising: Saturn in the 12th sign from your Moon, often linked with expenses, travel and restlessness. Peak: Saturn over your Moon sign, the most intense phase for the mind, health and responsibilities. Setting: Saturn in the 2nd sign from the Moon, touching money, family and speech, as the pressure eases.

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No. Saturn rewards discipline, patience and honest work, and many people build careers, marry or buy homes during Sade Sati. Its results depend on Saturn's strength in your chart, your running dasha and your Ashtakavarga scores, not on the transit alone.

What is Shani Dhaiya (Small Panoti)?

Dhaiya is Saturn's 2½-year transit of the 4th sign from your Moon (Kantaka Shani: home, comfort, peace of mind) or the 8th (Ashtama Shani: obstacles, health and sudden changes). It is milder and shorter than Sade Sati.

Why does a phase appear twice with different dates?

Saturn turns retrograde every year. Near the edge of a sign it can step back into the previous sign for a few months and then return, so a phase can start, pause and resume. The calculator shows every part.

Do I need my birth time for Sade Sati?

Only to find your Moon sign. The Moon changes sign about every 2¼ days, so the date usually decides it; if you were born on a day the Moon changed sign, the time matters. If you already know your Rashi, just pick it.

What remedies are traditionally suggested?

Common traditional practices include reciting the Hanuman Chalisa or the Shani mantra on Saturdays, lighting a sesame-oil lamp, charity to workers and the elderly, and steady, honest effort. These are spiritual practices, not guarantees.
