What the Jaimini system adds to the Kundli
Jaimini astrology, from the Jaimini Sutras, reads the same birth chart through signs more than planets. Signs aspect whole signs, the dashas are periods of signs, the planets take roles by how far they have moved through their sign, and each house has an image, its Arudha pada, showing how its matters appear to the world.
What this page shows
- Chara karakas: the Atmakaraka (highest degree) down to the Darakaraka (lowest), in both the seven- and eight-karaka schemes.
- Karakamsa: the Atmakaraka's Navamsa sign, with the planets in it, aspecting it and in the 12th from it.
- Arudha padas: A1 (Arudha Lagna) to A12 (Upapada), each with its house from the Lagna and the planets in it.
- Chara dasha: sign periods by K.N. Rao's method, with Antardashas and Pratyantardashas and the one running now.
- Rashi drishti and Argala: which signs and planets aspect each house, and the argala and its obstruction for every house.
The planets come from the same chart as your Kundli, with the ayanamsa you choose. For the Atmakaraka and Darakaraka on their own, see the Atmakaraka calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is Jaimini astrology?
A system of Vedic astrology taught in the Jaimini Sutras. Instead of planetary aspects and planet-ruled dashas it works mainly with signs: signs aspect signs (Rashi drishti), the dashas are of signs (Chara dasha), planets take roles by their degree (Chara karakas) and houses have 'images' (Arudha padas).
How are the Chara karakas found?
The planets are ranked by their degree within their sign, ignoring the sign. The highest is the Atmakaraka, then the Amatyakaraka and so on down to the Darakaraka. The seven-karaka scheme uses the Sun to Saturn; the eight-karaka scheme adds Rahu, whose degree is counted from the end of its sign, and a Pitrikaraka.
What is the Karakamsa?
The sign the Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa (D9). Jaimini astrologers read it, and the planets in and aspecting it, as a second Lagna for the soul's direction.
What are Arudha Lagna and Upapada?
An Arudha pada is a house's image: count from the house to its lord, then the same number of signs again from the lord. If that lands in the house itself it moves to the 10th from it, if in the 7th to the 4th from it. The pada of the 1st house is the Arudha Lagna (AL), of the 7th the Darapada (A7), of the 12th the Upapada (UL).
How is the Chara dasha calculated here?
By K.N. Rao's method. The dashas start from the Lagna at birth and run forward if the 9th sign from the Lagna is Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius, backward otherwise. Each sign gets the years counted from it to its lord, less one (12 if the lord is in the sign). Antardashas start from the next sign and end with the dasha sign. Checked against Rao's own worked example, period by period.
Which planet rules Scorpio and Aquarius?
Both have two lords in Jaimini: Mars and Ketu for Scorpio, Saturn and Rahu for Aquarius. The stronger one is used: the one with more planets beside it, then the exalted one, then the one in a dual sign, then the one further on in its sign. If one lord sits in the sign itself, the other is used.
