How Kundli matching works
Kundli matching, or Guna Milan, compares the Moon sign (rashi) and Moon nakshatra of the bride and groom across eight factors, the Ashtakoota. Each factor carries points, and together they add up to 36 gunas:
- Varna (1): temperament and outlook.
- Vashya (2): mutual attraction and influence.
- Tara (3): health and well-being, from the count between the two nakshatras.
- Yoni (4): physical and intimate compatibility, from the nakshatra animals.
- Graha Maitri (5): mental compatibility, from the friendship of the two Moon-sign lords.
- Gana (6): nature and behaviour: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa.
- Bhakoot (7): family welfare and finances, from the distance between the two Moon signs.
- Nadi (8): health and children; the same Nadi scores 0 (Nadi dosha).
Traditionally 18 of 36 is the minimum. This calculator also checks Nadi and Bhakoot dosha with their classical cancellations, and whether each person is Manglik. Read more in the 7th house and marriage and when will I get married?
Frequently asked questions
What is Kundli matching (Guna Milan)?
Kundli matching compares the Moon sign and Moon nakshatra of the bride and groom across eight factors, the Ashtakoota: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi. Together they give up to 36 points, called gunas.
How many gunas are needed for marriage?
Traditionally 18 of 36 is the minimum. 18–24 is considered acceptable, 25–32 very good and 33 or more excellent. A score is only one part of matching; astrologers also look at the full charts, doshas and dashas.
What is Nadi dosha?
Nadi dosha means both partners have the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), which scores 0 of 8 points. It is traditionally considered cancelled when the Moon signs are the same but the nakshatras differ, when the nakshatra is the same but the Moon signs differ, or when the nakshatra is the same but the padas differ.
What is Bhakoot dosha?
Bhakoot dosha occurs when the two Moon signs are in a 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 position, which scores 0 of 7. It is traditionally considered cancelled when both Moon signs have the same lord or the two lords are friends.
Do I need the exact birth time?
Guna Milan uses the Moon, which moves about 13° a day, so the date and place usually give the right nakshatra. The time matters when the Moon changed nakshatra that day, and for the Manglik check from the Lagna.
Why does my score differ from another website?
Calculators use slightly different tables for a few kootas (especially Vashya and Yoni) and different ayanamsas, so scores can differ by a point or two. NavAstro uses the True Chitra Paksha ayanamsa.
Is my data saved?
No. The matching is calculated on the spot and nothing is stored on our server.
Kundli matching is a traditional practice for reflection, not professional advice.
