The 16 divisional charts and what they show
A divisional chart (varga) takes each 30° sign of your birth chart, splits it into equal parts and maps every part to a sign again. Each chart zooms into one area of life. Parashara names these sixteen, the Shodashavarga:
- D1 Rasi: the birth chart itself, the whole life. D2 Hora: wealth. D3 Drekkana: siblings and courage. D4 Chaturthamsa: home, property and happiness.
- D7 Saptamsa: children. D9 Navamsa: marriage, dharma and the strength of every planet. D10 Dasamsa: career and status. D12 Dwadasamsa: parents.
- D16 Shodasamsa: vehicles and comforts. D20 Vimsamsa: spiritual practice. D24 Chaturvimsamsa: education. D27 Saptavimsamsa: strengths and weaknesses.
- D30 Trimsamsa: misfortunes and health. D40 Khavedamsa and D45 Akshavedamsa: maternal and paternal legacy. D60 Shashtiamsa: past-life karma, used to confirm everything else.
The divisional charts are read together with the D1, never alone. A planet strong in both the D1 and the relevant varga gives its results reliably; one strong in D1 but weak in its varga promises more than it delivers. Learn the basics in the D1 chart guide and how to read a kundali.
Frequently asked questions
What are divisional charts (D1 to D60)?
Divisional charts, or vargas, split each sign of the birth chart into equal parts and map them to signs again, giving a finer chart for one area of life: D9 (Navamsa) for marriage and dharma, D10 (Dasamsa) for career, D7 for children, D60 for past karma. Parashara lists 16 of them, the Shodashavarga.
Which divisional chart is the most important?
After the D1 birth chart, the D9 Navamsa is used in almost every reading, followed by the chart for the question asked: D10 for career, D7 for children, D4 for property, D24 for education.
Why does the D60 need an exact birth time?
Each D60 division is only half a degree, and the ascendant moves through it in about two minutes. A few minutes of error in the birth time can change the D60 ascendant, so it is reliable only with a precise birth time.
What is Vargottama?
A planet is Vargottama when it occupies the same sign in the D1 and the D9 charts. It is considered strong and dependable, as if its D1 promise is confirmed.
Which rules does this calculator use?
The standard rules of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, as in Jagannatha Hora: for example, D30 with the unequal Trimsamsa portions and D60 counted from the sign itself, with the same True Chitra Paksha ayanamsa as our Kundli.
