Manglik vs Anshik Manglik: What's the Difference?

"Manglik" is one of the most searched words in Indian astrology, and "Anshik Manglik" (partial Manglik) is close behind. Both describe Mars in certain houses of the birth chart, but they differ in how strongly the condition is present. This guide explains the rule, the difference, and why many Manglik charts are not as serious as the label suggests.

Quick answer: Mangal dosha is traditionally linked to Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. NavAstro counts these houses from both the Lagna and the Moon. If Mars is in one of them from both, NavAstro classifies the chart as Manglik (full); from exactly one, as Anshik (partial) Manglik. This is NavAstro's classification method; other traditions classify differently. Cancellation and mitigation factors are judged separately.

Manglik vs Anshik Manglik at a glance

NavAstro classification Mars in 1, 4, 7, 8 or 12 from the Lagna Mars in 1, 4, 7, 8 or 12 from the Moon Level (NavAstro)
Manglik (full) Yes Yes Full
Anshik Manglik (partial) Yes No Partial
Anshik Manglik (partial) No Yes Partial
Not Manglik No No None

In matching, a full Manglik is traditionally paired with a Manglik partner or examined for mitigating factors; an Anshik Manglik is often given less weight, although its significance depends on the complete chart and the tradition followed.

The houses that count

Mars is a fiery, assertive planet. In the houses tied to the self (1st), home and peace (4th), marriage (7th), longevity and in-laws (8th) and the bed of marriage (12th), tradition says its heat can strain married life. NavAstro counts these five houses from the Lagna and from the Moon.

Two additions are common, and NavAstro shows both without counting them in the verdict:

  • Venus as a third reference. Venus signifies the spouse, so some astrologers also count Mars's house from Venus and read a hit as extra weight. The calculator shows Mars's house from Venus as an additional observation, not a third vote: Mars in a dosha house from the Lagna and Venus but not the Moon is still Anshik, not full Manglik.
  • The 2nd house. Some traditions also include the 2nd house (family and domestic life), giving the six-house list 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12. NavAstro follows the five-house method and notes a 2nd-house placement separately.

Why "Anshik"?

"Anshik" means partial. When Mars is in a dosha house from only one of the two references (say, the 7th from the Lagna but the 6th from the Moon), NavAstro classifies it as a partial rather than a full Manglik condition; its actual significance depends on the complete chart and the tradition being followed (some, for example, give the Lagna more weight than the Moon). The word is not used the same way everywhere: some astrologers also call a chart Anshik when a full Manglik is reduced by mitigating factors, or when Mars is in the 2nd house. NavAstro uses one clear, repeatable rule: both references = Manglik, exactly one = Anshik, and shows the Lagna, Moon and Venus results separately so you can see how the verdict was reached.

Cancellation, mitigation and balancing

Three different ideas are often mixed together under "cancellation". It helps to keep them apart.

1. Cancellation or reduction in the chart itself (dosha bhanga, parihara). Traditions differ on which of these remove the dosha and which only soften it:

  • Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn): a dignified Mars is often treated as mitigating.
  • Specific sign-and-house exceptions. Some schools keep lists of placements that don't count, for example Mars in Aries in the 1st, or in Cancer or Capricorn in the 7th. The lists vary from school to school, and they come from the lists themselves, not from Mars's strength: Cancer is actually Mars's debilitation sign, while Capricorn is its exaltation sign. NavAstro's calculator identifies the commonly cited traditional exceptions and mitigating factors in your chart; their significance depends on the tradition followed and the complete birth chart.
  • Jupiter joining or aspecting Mars, considered protective by some traditions.
  • Jupiter or Venus in the 1st house, or Jupiter in the 7th, accepted by some schools.

2. Balancing between partners. When both partners are Manglik, the doshas are traditionally held to balance each other. This is a matching principle: it doesn't erase Mars's placement in either chart.

3. The rest of the chart. Even with a mitigating factor, Mars still has to be read with the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the dashas. No single factor decides the outcome.

A worked example

A sample birth used to show the house counting (not a real person): 12 August 1994, 6:40 am, Lucknow. NavAstro's chart engine places the Lagna in Leo, the Moon in Virgo and Mars in Gemini.

Reference Sign Mars's house from it Dosha house?
Lagna Leo 11th No
Moon Virgo 10th No
Venus Virgo 10th No (not counted)

Mars falls in the 11th from the Lagna and the 10th from the Moon, neither of them a dosha house, so this chart is Not Manglik.

To see Anshik Manglik, imagine only Mars moved to Aquarius with the rest of the chart unchanged (a hypothetical change, not a recalculated birth chart): it would be in the 7th from the Leo Lagna but the 6th from the Virgo Moon, so Anshik Manglik.

What it means for kundli matching

Manglik status is one factor in matching, not a verdict on its own, and it cannot decide whether a marriage will succeed. Astrologers usually look at both partners together: a Manglik with a Manglik, any mitigating factors in both charts, the overall Ashtakoot score and the 7th house of each. An Anshik Manglik is often given less weight in matching, although its significance depends on the complete chart and the tradition being followed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Manglik and Anshik Manglik? In NavAstro's classification, Manglik means Mars is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from both the Lagna and the Moon; Anshik (partial) Manglik means from exactly one of them. Other traditions may use different references.

Is Anshik Manglik bad for marriage? It is often given less weight than a full Manglik, but its significance depends on the complete chart and the tradition followed. Most astrologers read it together with the rest of the chart and the partner's chart rather than treating it as a problem on its own.

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik? Many astrologers allow it when the dosha is mitigated or mild, after checking both charts. The traditional preference is to match a Manglik with a Manglik.

Does Manglik dosha end at age 28? That is a popular belief, not a classical rule. The dosha is judged from the chart; its effects are often said to ease with age and maturity.

Is the 2nd house counted? In some traditions, yes. NavAstro follows the five-house rule (1, 4, 7, 8, 12) from the Lagna and the Moon and notes a 2nd-house placement separately.

Can someone be Manglik from Venus but not from the Lagna and Moon? Yes. Under NavAstro's method Venus is an additional reference and doesn't change the classification, so that chart is Not Manglik. Some other traditions include Venus in the main assessment and would read it differently.

Why does the calculator show Venus if it doesn't count it? Venus is the significator of the spouse, and some astrologers count Mars from it too. NavAstro shows it so you can see that reading as well, but keeps the verdict to the Lagna and the Moon.
