In Vedic astrology, the 7th house is the house of marriage. It sits directly opposite the Lagna (the 1st house, which is you), so it describes "the other": your spouse, your business partners and any close one-to-one relationship. When people ask what their kundli says about marriage, the 7th house is where an astrologer starts.
What the 7th house shows
- The spouse: their nature, appearance and background, as described by the sign on the 7th house and the planets that influence it.
- Married life: how harmonious, stable or demanding the relationship is likely to be.
- Timing: when the house is activated by dasha and transit, marriage becomes likely. See When Will I Get Married? for the full method.
- Partnerships in general: business partners, contracts and how you deal with the public.
The 7th lord
The planet that rules the sign on the 7th house is called the 7th lord. It carries the matters of the 7th house wherever it goes in the chart, so its placement is often more revealing than the 7th house itself.
| 7th lord in | Common reading |
|---|---|
| 1st house | The spouse is closely tied to your own life and identity; partnership is central to you. |
| 4th or 10th house | Marriage connected to home and family, or to career and status. |
| 5th house | A link between romance and marriage, a traditional sign of love marriage. |
| 6th, 8th or 12th house | Marriage may involve effort, delay, distance or transformation. |
| 9th house | A fortunate, dharmic marriage; a spouse who brings luck. |
| 11th house | Marriage fulfils desires; often through friends or social circles. |
The strength of the 7th lord matters as much as its house. A 7th lord in its own sign or exalted, or aspected by Jupiter, gives good results even from a difficult house. A 7th lord that is debilitated, combust or hemmed in by malefics needs more support.
Planets in the 7th house
Each planet colours the 7th house in its own way:
- Sun: a proud or strong-willed spouse; ego clashes are possible. Marriage may come a little later.
- Moon: an emotional, caring spouse; changing moods in the relationship.
- Mars: passion and energy, but also arguments. This is one of the Manglik placements.
- Mercury: a youthful, talkative or intelligent spouse; a friendship-based marriage.
- Jupiter: a wise, decent spouse and a protected marriage. One of the best placements.
- Venus: affection and attraction; Venus is strong here for love and comfort, though classical texts warn that the karaka in its own house can make the person too dependent on it.
- Saturn: delay, but also stability and commitment. Often marriage to a mature or older partner. See Late Marriage in Kundli.
- Rahu: an unconventional match, foreign or different background, sudden events.
- Ketu: detachment or spiritual tendencies in partnership; the relationship needs conscious attention.
These are tendencies, not verdicts. Aspects and the condition of the 7th lord can change the picture a lot.
Aspects on the 7th house
In Vedic astrology every planet aspects the 7th house from itself. Jupiter, Saturn and Mars also have special aspects:
- Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from itself. Its aspect on the 7th house protects marriage.
- Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from itself. Its aspect brings delay and seriousness.
- Mars aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th houses from itself. Its aspect adds heat and arguments.
So even an empty 7th house can be strongly influenced. An empty 7th house is very common, and it does not mean there will be no marriage.
The 7th house in the Navamsa chart
The Navamsa (D9) is the divisional chart of marriage. Astrologers check the 7th house and 7th lord in the D9, and where the main chart's 7th lord falls in the D9. Strength in the Navamsa can rescue a weak 7th house in the main chart, and weakness there can spoil a good one.
How the 7th house times marriage
Marriage usually comes when the 7th house is activated in three ways at once:
- Dasha: the Mahadasha or Antardasha of the 7th lord, a planet in the 7th, or Venus. See Dasha Periods That Bring Marriage.
- Jupiter's transit: over the 7th house or 7th lord, or aspecting them. See How Jupiter's Transit Triggers Marriage.
- Saturn's transit: also influencing the 7th house or its lord (the "double transit").
The free Marriage Timing Calculator checks these and many other techniques for your chart and draws a graph of the months where they agree.
Frequently asked questions
What if my 7th house is empty? That is normal and says nothing bad. Read the 7th lord, Venus and the aspects on the 7th house instead.
Does a malefic in the 7th house mean divorce? No. Malefics show challenges or delays to work through. Benefic aspects, a strong 7th lord and the Navamsa all have to be weighed together.
Is the 7th house read from the Moon too? Yes. Many astrologers also read the 7th house from the Moon sign (Chandra Lagna), especially when the birth time is uncertain.
