Kundli Houses Explained: Meaning of All 12 Houses in Vedic Astrology

Your kundli is divided into 12 houses (bhavas). Each house is one area of life: your body, your money, your siblings, your home, your children and so on, all the way to expenses and liberation in the 12th. Planets sit in these houses, and the house a planet occupies tells you where in life it gives its results. This guide explains what every house means, how the houses are grouped, and how to read them in your own chart.

See your houses first. The free Kundli calculator shows your Lagna, all 12 houses and which planet sits in each, in North or South Indian style. No sign-up.

How the houses are counted

The 1st house is your Lagna (Ascendant): the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. The 2nd house is the next sign, the 3rd the one after, and so on around the chart. So if your Lagna is Leo, your 2nd house is Virgo, your 3rd is Libra, and your 12th is Cancer.

This is why the birth time matters so much. The rising sign changes about every two hours, and when it changes, every house moves with it. Two people born on the same day can have the same planets in the same signs but in completely different houses. (See How to Read a Lagna Chart for how this looks on the chart itself.)

A karaka is the planet that naturally signifies a house's matters in every chart. When you judge a house, look at the house, its lord and its karaka. For marriage, for example, you read the 7th house, the 7th lord and Venus together. See The 7th House in Vedic Astrology.

The groups of houses

Classical texts sort the houses into groups. Knowing them saves time, because a planet's strength depends a lot on which group its house belongs to.

  • Kendras (angles): 1, 4, 7, 10. The pillars of the chart. Planets here are prominent and act strongly. The kendras carry Vishnu's protective quality in classical writing.
  • Trikonas (trines): 1, 5, 9. The houses of fortune and dharma. Planets and lords connected with these houses bring blessings. The 1st house is both a kendra and a trikona, which is why the Lagna lord is always important.
  • Dusthanas (difficult houses): 6, 8, 12. Houses of struggle, sudden change and loss. They are not "bad" houses: the 6th is also the house of work and service, and the 12th of spiritual release. But planets ruling them can bring obstacles.
  • Upachayas (houses of growth): 3, 6, 10, 11. Results here improve with time and effort. Malefic planets such as Saturn, Mars and Rahu often do well in these houses.
  • Marakas: 2 and 7. Classically linked with endings in longevity calculations. Don't read anything frightening into this on your own: no one can judge longevity from one house.

There is also a grouping by the four aims of life: dharma (1, 5, 9), artha, or wealth (2, 6, 10), kama, or desire (3, 7, 11), and moksha, or liberation (4, 8, 12). The artha houses matter for career, which is why career astrology looks at the 2nd, 6th and 10th together.

What an empty house means

Many people worry when their 7th or 10th house has no planets. An empty house is not a weak house. Most charts have three or four empty houses, because nine planets are spread over twelve houses. An empty house is read through:

  1. Its lord: where the ruling planet of that sign sits, and how strong it is.
  2. Aspects: which planets look at the house (every planet aspects the 7th house from itself, and Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have extra aspects).
  3. Its karaka, and the house's score in Ashtakavarga.

The lord is usually the most important of the three. See The 12 Houses and Their Lords for the lord of every house for every Lagna.

A worked example

Here is a real chart from NavAstro's calculator, for an example birth (not a real person): 12 August 1994, 6:40 am, Lucknow. The Lagna is Leo.

House Sign Planets
1st Leo —
2nd Virgo Moon, Venus
3rd Libra Jupiter, Rahu
4th Scorpio —
5th Sagittarius —
6th Capricorn —
7th Aquarius Saturn (retrograde)
8th Pisces —
9th Aries Ketu
10th Taurus —
11th Gemini Mars
12th Cancer Sun, Mercury

How the houses read here:

  • 2nd house (Moon, Venus): money, family and speech are emotionally important. Venus is debilitated in Virgo, so the comforts it promises take effort.
  • 7th house (Saturn in its own sign Aquarius): a serious, committed view of partnership, often with some delay. Saturn in its own sign in a kendra also forms Shasha yoga (see Yoga in Kundli).
  • 10th house (empty): read through its lord Venus, sitting in the 2nd. Career links to money, family business, speech or valuables.
  • 12th house (Sun, Mercury): the Lagna lord Sun is in the 12th, which classically points to foreign connections, work behind the scenes, or spending on others.

Notice how much the empty 10th still says once you follow its lord.

Common mistakes

  • Counting houses from the Moon or the Sun by mistake. The standard houses are counted from the Lagna. The calculator also shows houses "from Moon" (Chandra lagna), which is a separate, supporting view.
  • Judging a house only by the planets in it. The lord and aspects matter at least as much.
  • Reading a dusthana as pure bad news. A strong 6th house gives the ability to beat competition and win in service.

Frequently asked questions

Which house is the most important in a kundli? The 1st house, the Lagna. It is both a kendra and a trikona, it sets up all the other houses, and its lord's strength colours the whole chart.

Which house shows career in a kundli? The 10th house (karma bhava) is the main one, supported by the 2nd (income), the 6th (service and daily work) and the 11th (gains).

What does it mean if a house has no planets? Nothing bad by itself. Read it through its lord, the planets aspecting it and its karaka.

Are bhavas the same as signs? No. Signs (rashis) are fixed sections of the zodiac. Houses (bhavas) are counted from your Lagna, so the same sign can be a different house in different charts.
