True Rahu is Rahu's real position at the moment of birth. It wobbles a little forward and back around the average, and for short spells it even moves forward.

Mean Rahu is its average position, moving steadily backwards through the zodiac at about 3′ a day.

The two are at most about 1.7° apart. That rarely changes Rahu's sign in the birth chart, but it can change it in the finer charts, D9 to D60. Ketu is always exactly opposite.

Most people use True Rahu with Modified Lahiri, and Mean Rahu with Lahiri and True Chitra. That is what As the ayanamsa does.

How double transit works

Jupiter and Saturn are the two slow planets that time the big events of life. Jupiter brings opportunity and growth; Saturn makes things real and lasting. The double transit rule says an area of life is activated when both influence its house, or the sign holding that house's lord, at the same time.

  • Influence: a planet influences the sign it is in and the signs it aspects. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself; Saturn the 3rd, 7th and 10th.
  • The house: counted from your Lagna (or your Moon sign if the birth time is unknown). Marriage is the 7th house, career the 10th, children the 5th.
  • The lord: the planet ruling that house's sign, at its birth position. A double transit on the lord's sign counts as well, so the table shows which of the two is activated.
  • With the dasha: a double transit opens the door; the dasha decides whether you walk through it. An event is expected when both point to the same house.

Because Jupiter and Saturn between them reach many signs, double transit windows are not rare. Read them as periods of opportunity, together with the dasha and the rest of the chart, not as fixed predictions. More on timing in Jupiter transit and marriage and when will I get married.

Frequently asked questions

What is double transit in astrology?

A rule for timing events: an area of life is said to be activated when transiting Jupiter and transiting Saturn both influence the house of that area, or its lord, at the same time. Influence means the planet sits in the sign or aspects it.

Which aspects count?

Whole-sign aspects. Jupiter influences the sign it is in and the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from it. Saturn influences the sign it is in and the 3rd, 7th and 10th signs from it. A sign both reach is under double transit.

Does double transit guarantee an event?

No. Jupiter and Saturn between them touch many signs, so double transit windows come round often. The rule is read together with the dasha: an event is expected when the running dasha supports the same house and the double transit falls on it. Treat a window as a time of opportunity, not a promise.

Should I count from the Lagna or the Moon?

The Lagna is the usual reference for timing personal events. Counting from the Moon is common in rashifals and is the only option when the birth time is not known; this calculator switches to the Moon automatically then.

Which house is checked for marriage, career or children?

Marriage: the 7th house and its lord. Career: the 10th. Children: the 5th. Home and property: the 4th. Income: the 11th. Choose the life area in the form; the default is marriage.

How long do double transit windows last?

From a few weeks to over a year. Saturn stays about two and a half years in a sign and Jupiter about one, and retrograde motion can open and close a window more than once.
