How the naming letter is found

The Moon's position at birth falls in one of 27 nakshatras, and each nakshatra has four padas. Each pada has a traditional starting sound, which gives 108 sounds in all. Choosing a name with that sound is part of the naming ceremony (namkaran) in many families.

Use this as a starting point. A name is also about its meaning, how it sounds with your family name, and what you love. Read more in making a newborn baby's kundali.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my baby's name letter?

Enter the date, time and place of birth. The Moon's nakshatra and pada at that moment give the traditional starting sound. If you already know the nakshatra, pick it from the table.

Must the name start with this sound?

No. It is a family and religious tradition, not a rule. Many families use it for a formal name kept for rituals, and choose a different everyday name.

Why are some sounds empty?

Some sounds, such as ङ and ञ, are almost never used to begin a name. We don't make names up for them. Families usually choose from the nakshatra's other sounds, or ask their family priest.

Why does another list give different letters?

The tables vary a little between traditions and regions, especially for Shravana. If your family priest or panchang gives a different sound, follow your own tradition.

How accurate does the birth time need to be?

The Moon crosses a pada in about 6 hours, so the time matters. Use the time from the hospital record if you can.

Does a name change a child's future?

Nobody can promise that. Choose a name you love, with a meaning you like, that sounds good with your family name.
