Reading a kundali isn't about memorising a thousand rules. It's about asking the right questions in the right order. This guide gives you that order, in eight steps, and works through every step on one real chart, so you can see how the pieces fit: planets, houses, signs, aspects, yogas and dashas.

The four building blocks
- Planets (grahas) are what acts: nine of them, the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
- Signs (rashis) are how they act: the same planet behaves differently in fiery Aries and earthy Taurus.
- Houses (bhavas) are where in life they act: money, marriage, career and so on. See Kundli Houses Explained.
- Dashas are when they act: the planetary periods that switch each planet's results on.
Yogas are special combinations of these. A good reading layers them in this order.
The example chart
Every step below uses this real chart from NavAstro's calculator, for an example birth (not a real person): 12 August 1994, 6:40 am, Lucknow.
| Planet | Sign | House | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Cancer | 12th | |
| Moon | Virgo | 2nd | Nakshatra Chitra |
| Mars | Gemini | 11th | |
| Mercury | Cancer | 12th | Combust (1.1° from the Sun) |
| Jupiter | Libra | 3rd | |
| Venus | Virgo | 2nd | Debilitated |
| Saturn | Aquarius | 7th | Own sign, retrograde |
| Rahu | Libra | 3rd | |
| Ketu | Aries | 9th |
Lagna: Leo.
Step 1: the Lagna and its lord
The Lagna and its lord describe the person: body, temperament, and the direction of life. Leo Lagna gives dignity, pride in one's work and a wish to lead. Its lord, the Sun, sits in the 12th house: the self turns outward to foreign places, institutions, or quiet service. A Lagna lord in the 12th often shows someone who works far from where they were born.
Step 2: the Moon
The Moon is the mind. Its sign is the rashi, and its nakshatra sets the dasha sequence. Here the Moon is in Virgo (Kanya rashi) in Chitra nakshatra: a precise, discriminating mind that notices details, with Chitra's love of design and craft. The Moon in the 2nd house ties emotional security to money and family. See Kanya Rashi in English.
Step 3: each planet's strength
Check dignity (exalted, own sign, debilitated), combustion and retrogression:
- Saturn in its own sign is the strongest planet here.
- Venus is debilitated in Virgo: love, comfort and art need effort to bloom.
- Mercury is combust: its intelligence works, but under the Sun's authority, often unseen.
Strong planets give their results easily; weak ones give them with delay or struggle. Weak doesn't mean absent.
Step 4: the houses and their lords
Now read the houses that matter for the question. For the overall picture, check the kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) and trikonas (1, 5, 9) and their lords:
- 4th and 9th lord Mars (the yogakaraka for Leo) sits in the 11th house of gains: property, comfort and luck turn into income.
- 10th lord Venus sits in the 2nd: career is linked to money and family.
- 7th lord Saturn sits in its own 7th house: a steady, committed partnership theme.
The lord of every house for every Lagna is in The 12 Houses and Their Lords.
Step 5: aspects (drishti)
In Vedic astrology, every planet aspects the 7th house from itself. Three planets have extra aspects:
- Mars: the 4th and 8th houses from itself.
- Jupiter: the 5th and 9th.
- Saturn: the 3rd and 10th.
In the example, Jupiter in the 3rd aspects the 7th, 9th and 11th houses: it blesses Saturn in the 7th, the 9th house of luck, and Mars in the 11th. Saturn in the 7th aspects the 9th, 1st and 4th, bringing seriousness and responsibility to the self and the home. Mars in the 11th aspects the 2nd, 5th and 6th, firing up Moon and Venus in the 2nd.
Step 6: yogas
Yogas are named combinations. The example has:
- Shasha yoga: Saturn in its own sign in a kendra (the 7th). One of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, it gives discipline, endurance and authority over people.
- Budhaditya yoga: the Sun and Mercury together in Cancer, though Mercury's combustion and the 12th house placement soften it.
See Yoga in Kundli for the common yogas and their rules.
Step 7: dashas
The Vimshottari dasha decides when each promise activates. This person was born in the Mars Mahadasha (Chitra is ruled by Mars), and is now in the Jupiter Mahadasha, 2018–2034. Jupiter rules the 5th and 8th and aspects the 7th, 9th and 11th, so this is a period of study, research, and growth through effort. Inside it, the Venus Antardasha (Nov 2025 – Jul 2028) activates the 10th lord, highlighting career. See Dasha Periods That Bring Marriage for how dashas time a specific event.
Step 8: divisional charts
Finally, confirm with the D9 (marriage and inner strength) and D10 (career). In this chart's D9, Venus moves from debilitation into Aries, which is a fair placement, and Saturn moves to Pisces. A planet weak in the D1 but better in the D9 tends to improve with age. See D1 Chart in Vedic Astrology.
Putting it together
A one-paragraph summary of the example: A Leo Lagna person whose life points outward and abroad (Lagna lord in the 12th), with a careful, detail-oriented mind (Moon in Virgo), real staying power (Shasha yoga), a serious attitude to partnership (Saturn in the 7th), and gains that come through property, luck and networks (yogakaraka Mars in the 11th). The current Jupiter–Venus period puts career and money in focus until mid-2028.
That's a reading. It came from the same eight questions you can ask of any chart.
Frequently asked questions
What should I look at first in a kundali? The Lagna and its lord, then the Moon. Together they describe the person before any specific question.
Do I need the D9 chart to read a kundali? Not to start. The D1 gives the main reading. The D9 refines it, especially for marriage and the strength of planets.
How do I know if a planet is strong? Check its sign (exalted or own sign is strong, debilitated is weak), whether it's combust, and its house (kendras and trikonas are strong, 6/8/12 is harder).
Can I read my own kundali? Yes, for the basics. For timing and complex questions, a trained astrologer reads many more factors.
