D1 Chart in Vedic Astrology: How to Understand Your Birth Chart

The D1 chart is your main birth chart in Vedic astrology. It's also called the Rashi chart, the Lagna chart or simply the kundli. Every other chart, including the D9 and D10, is worked out from it, and every reading starts with it. This guide explains what the D1 chart shows, how it differs from the divisional charts, and how to read it in five steps.

Make your D1 chart. The free Kundli calculator draws your D1, D9 and D10 charts side by side, with every planet's sign, degree and house. No sign-up.

What "D1" means

Vedic astrology uses divisional charts (vargas): each sign of 30° is divided into equal parts, and the planets are placed in new signs according to which part they fall in. The number after the "D" is how many parts:

Chart Name Each sign divided into Read for
D1 Rashi 1 (the whole sign) Everything: body, life, all houses
D2 Hora 2 Wealth
D3 Drekkana 3 Siblings, courage
D7 Saptamsa 7 Children
D9 Navamsa 9 Marriage, inner strength of planets
D10 Dashamsa 10 Career
D12 Dwadasamsa 12 Parents

The D1 doesn't divide anything: it is the sky as it was, with each planet in its actual sign. That's why it's the foundation. A divisional chart refines one area of life; the D1 shows whether that area is promised in the first place. A good rule: what the D1 doesn't promise, a divisional chart can't give.

What the D1 chart shows

The D1 chart has three layers:

  1. Signs (rashis): the 12 zodiac signs, Aries to Pisces.
  2. Houses (bhavas): the 12 houses, counted from the Lagna. See Kundli Houses Explained.
  3. Planets (grahas): the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, each in a sign and a house.

Each planet then has a sign (how it behaves), a house (where in life it acts) and a dignity (how strong it is).

How to read the D1 chart in five steps

1. Find the Lagna. The Lagna is the 1st house and the most personal point in the chart: body, temperament and direction. Note its sign and where its lord sits.

2. Find the Moon. The Moon's sign is your rashi and shows your mind and emotions. Its nakshatra sets your dasha sequence. See Find Your Moon Sign.

3. Check each planet's dignity. Is the planet exalted, in its own sign, in a friend's sign, or debilitated? NavAstro's chart marks exalted planets with ↑, debilitated ones with ↓ and retrograde ones with ᴿ.

4. Read the houses and their lords. Which houses are occupied, where each house lord has gone, and which planets aspect which houses. See The 12 Houses and Their Lords.

5. Look for yogas. Combinations such as Gaja Kesari, Raj yoga or the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. See Yoga in Kundli.

A worked example

A real D1 chart from NavAstro's calculator, for an example birth (not a real person): 12 August 1994, 6:40 am, Lucknow.

Planet Sign Degree House Dignity
Sun Cancer 25.4° 12th —
Moon Virgo 26.3° 2nd —
Mars Gemini 3.1° 11th —
Mercury Cancer 24.3° 12th —
Jupiter Libra 13.4° 3rd —
Venus Virgo 10.9° 2nd Debilitated ↓
Saturn Aquarius 16.8° 7th Own sign, retrograde ᴿ
Rahu Libra 25.5° 3rd —
Ketu Aries 25.5° 9th —

Reading it with the five steps:

  1. Lagna Leo, ruled by the Sun. The Sun sits in the 12th: a life with foreign links, work behind the scenes, or spending on others.
  2. Moon in Virgo, nakshatra Chitra: an analytical, careful mind. The rashi is Kanya.
  3. Dignity: Saturn is strong in its own sign; Venus is debilitated. Mercury is just 1.1° from the Sun, so it is combust (its significations are absorbed by the Sun).
  4. Houses: the 7th house holds its own lord Saturn, which steadies marriage and partnerships. Mars, ruler of the 4th and 9th (the yogakaraka for Leo Lagna), sits in the 11th house of gains.
  5. Yogas: Saturn in its own sign in a kendra forms Shasha yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas.

In the same person's D9 chart, Venus moves to Aries and Saturn to Pisces, and the D9 Lagna is Gemini. Those placements refine marriage, but they don't replace what the D1 says.

D1 vs D9: which one matters more?

The D1 is the main chart; the D9 is the most important divisional chart. Astrologers read them together: the D1 shows the promise, the D9 shows the inner strength and how things ripen, especially in marriage and in the second half of life. A planet debilitated in the D1 but strong in the D9 often gives better results than its D1 placement suggests. A planet in the same sign in both charts is called vargottama and is considered extra strong.

Frequently asked questions

Is the D1 chart the same as the Lagna chart? Yes. D1, Rashi chart, Lagna chart and birth chart are all names for the same main chart.

What is the difference between D1 and D9? The D1 is the sky at birth with every planet in its actual sign. The D9 divides each sign into nine parts and is read for marriage and the inner strength of planets.

Can the D1 chart be wrong? The planets' signs are rarely wrong, but the Lagna and houses depend on your birth time. A time error of even 15–30 minutes can change the Lagna if you were born near the edge of a sign.

Do I need to know my birth time for a D1 chart? For the Lagna and houses, yes. Without it, you can still read the planets' signs and your Moon sign.
