Dasha Periods That Bring Marriage

In Vedic astrology, the dasha is the clock of the chart. Your birth chart shows what is promised; the dasha shows when each promise can be delivered. For marriage, the right dasha is the most important timing factor. Transits only pick the months inside it.

A quick refresher on Vimshottari dasha

The Vimshottari dasha system covers 120 years, divided among the nine planets in a fixed order:

Planet Mahadasha length
Ketu 7 years
Venus 20 years
Sun 6 years
Moon 10 years
Mars 7 years
Rahu 18 years
Jupiter 16 years
Saturn 19 years
Mercury 17 years

Your starting dasha depends on the nakshatra your Moon was in at birth. Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas (sub-periods), in the same order starting with the Mahadasha lord, and each Antardasha into Pratyantardashas. Marriage is usually timed at the Antardasha level, then refined.

Which dashas bring marriage

A dasha lord can give marriage when it is connected to the marriage houses or significators. The strongest candidates are:

  1. The 7th lord. The ruler of the house of marriage. Its period, or a period of a planet in its nakshatra, is one of the most common times for marriage.
  2. Planets in the 7th house. Any planet placed in the 7th becomes a carrier of 7th-house results.
  3. Planets aspecting the 7th house or its lord. Especially Jupiter.
  4. Venus. The karaka of marriage, in every chart. See Venus and Marriage Timing.
  5. The 2nd lord. The 2nd house is family; marriage adds a member to the family.
  6. The 11th lord. The 11th house is fulfilled desires, and it is the 5th from the 7th, so it supports the spouse's happiness.
  7. Rahu and Ketu, when placed in or connected to the 7th house, or when sitting in a sign ruled by a marriage planet. Rahu often brings sudden or unconventional marriages.
  8. Planets connected to the 7th house in the Navamsa (D9). A planet that is unrelated in the main chart can still give marriage if it is strongly linked to marriage in the D9.

The strongest periods combine these: for example a Venus Mahadasha with a 7th-lord Antardasha, or a 7th-lord Mahadasha with a Venus Antardasha.

Dashas that can delay marriage

Periods of planets linked to the 6th (conflict), 8th (obstacles) or 12th (separation, expenses) houses, and with no link to the 7th, are usually less supportive. Saturn periods may delay matters, though Saturn often gives a stable marriage when it is the 7th lord or is well placed. See Late Marriage in Kundli.

Using more than one dasha system

Vimshottari is the main system, but astrologers often confirm its results with:

  • Yogini dasha, a 36-year cycle of eight periods, popular in north India for timing events.
  • Chara dasha, the Jaimini sign-based dasha. Marriage often comes in the period of the sign holding the Darakaraka or Upapada, or a sign aspecting them.

When two or three dasha systems point to the same years, the window is much stronger.

From dasha to the exact months

Once a supportive Antardasha is found, transits narrow the timing:

  • Jupiter transiting or aspecting the 7th house, the 7th lord or Venus. See How Jupiter's Transit Triggers Marriage.
  • Saturn also influencing the 7th house or its lord (the double transit).
  • The Pratyantardasha (third-level period) of a marriage planet.

How to find your current dasha

The free Kundli calculator lists your Vimshottari Mahadashas and Antardashas with exact dates. Note which ones belong to your 7th lord, to Venus and to the planets in your 7th house, and you'll have a short list of candidate periods.

Or let the free Marriage Timing Calculator do it: it runs the Vimshottari, Yogini and Chara dasha checks together with transit and Jaimini techniques, and graphs where they agree.

Frequently asked questions

I'm in Saturn Mahadasha. Can I still get married? Yes. Look at the Antardashas inside it: a Venus or 7th-lord Antardasha within Saturn's Mahadasha is a common time for marriage.

My 7th lord's dasha came at age 10. What then? A period that comes too early or too late in life can't give marriage. Then the Antardasha of the 7th lord inside another Mahadasha, or other marriage significators, become the timing points.

How exact are dasha dates? They depend on the Moon's exact position, so a wrong birth time can shift them by weeks or months. Use your recorded birth time if you can.
