Kanya rashi in English is Virgo, the sixth sign of the zodiac. Kanya is Sanskrit for "maiden" or "young girl", which is also what Virgo means in Latin. But there's a catch that confuses many people: being Kanya rashi in Vedic astrology does not necessarily make you a Virgo in a Western horoscope. Kanya rashi vs Virgo: why they can differ
There are three reasons a "Kanya" person might not be a Western Virgo:
- Rashi means Moon sign. In Indian astrology, "my rashi is Kanya" means the Moon was in Virgo when you were born. Western horoscopes go by the Sun sign, from your birth date.
- Different zodiacs. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is currently about 24° behind the Western (tropical) one. So the Sun is in Vedic Kanya from about 17 September to 17 October, while Western Virgo runs from 23 August to 22 September.
- Lagna is a third sign. Some people call their Lagna (rising sign) their rashi by mistake. It's a separate thing.
A real example
From NavAstro's calculator, for an example birth (not a real person): 12 August 1994, 6:40 am, Lucknow.
- Western Sun sign: Leo (born 12 August).
- Vedic Sun sign: Cancer.
- Moon sign (rashi): Kanya. The Moon is at 26.3° Virgo, in Chitra nakshatra pada 1.
- Lagna: Leo.
So this person is a Leo in Western astrology, but Kanya rashi in Vedic astrology, and should read the Kanya rashifal. Interestingly, the Moon crossed into Libra at about 12:50 pm that day, so someone born that afternoon would be Tula rashi instead.
Kanya rashi nature and traits
The Moon in Kanya shapes the mind with Mercury's earthy precision:
- Strengths: analytical, organised, practical, helpful, modest, good with details, numbers and language; often skilled with the hands (Hasta nakshatra means "hand").
- Challenges: worry and overthinking, self-criticism, perfectionism, holding back feelings.
- In relationships: shows love through care and practical help rather than grand gestures; needs a partner who values reliability.
- At work: suits accounts, audit, data, editing, medicine and healthcare, teaching, research, crafts and any field where accuracy counts.

- Now (2026): Saturn is in Pisces, the 7th sign from Kanya. No Sade Sati and no Dhaiya.
- 2027: Saturn enters Aries, the 8th from Kanya, on 3 June 2027, starting Ashtama Shani (a Dhaiya). It returns to Pisces from 20 October 2027 and enters Aries for good on 23 February 2028.
