Ashtakavarga for Marriage: What Your 7th House Score Means

Most marriage readings look at the 7th house, Venus and the dashas. Ashtakavarga adds something they don't: a number. It tells you how much support your 7th house has in your chart, and which years of Jupiter's and Saturn's transits will feel smoother for relationships. This guide explains how to read those numbers for marriage, step by step, without needing to calculate anything by hand.

Get your numbers first. The free Ashtakavarga calculator shows your Sarvashtakavarga points for all 12 houses and each planet's bindus in seconds. No sign-up.

Ashtakavarga in one minute

Ashtakavarga ("eight sources of strength") comes from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The seven planets and the Lagna each give a point, a bindu, to certain signs in your chart. Two tables come out of it:

  • Bhinnashtakavarga (BAV): one table per planet, with 0 to 8 bindus in each sign. Four is average.
  • Sarvashtakavarga (SAV): all seven planet tables added together. Every chart totals 337 points, about 28 per house on average.

So a house with 28 or more SAV points is better supported than average, and one well below 28 needs more care. That's the "28-point rule" you'll see everywhere.

Step 1: your 7th house SAV score

Find the 7th house (counted from your Lagna) in the Sarvashtakavarga table:

7th house SAV What it suggests
30 or more Strong support for partnership. Marriage tends to come more easily, and the relationship has resilience.
28–29 Above average: a solid base.
25–27 Average: results depend more on the 7th lord, Venus and the dasha.
Below 25 The house needs more effort and patience. It points to delay or adjustment, not to denial of marriage.

A low score is not a verdict. Ashtakavarga measures support, while the promise of marriage comes from the whole chart: the 7th lord's placement, Venus, Jupiter and aspects. Read the score together with the 7th house and marriage.

Step 2: Venus and Jupiter bindus

Two planets matter most for marriage, so check their own tables (BAV):

  • Venus, the natural significator of marriage and love: look at Venus's bindus in the sign it occupies. With 5 or more, Venus gives its results freely; with 3 or fewer, love life may need more patience. See Venus and Marriage Timing.
  • Jupiter, the significator of the husband in a woman's chart and of blessings in general: check its bindus in the sign it occupies and in your 7th house sign.
  • The 7th lord: the planet ruling your 7th house sign. Its bindus in its own position show how well it can deliver.

Step 3: compare the houses around marriage

Marriage is read from a group of houses, not one:

  • 2nd house: family life and the addition of a new family member.
  • 7th house: the spouse and partnership.
  • 11th house: fulfilment of desires and the support of friends and elders.
  • 12th house: bed pleasures, but also expenses and losses.

A useful classical guideline: when the 11th house has more points than the 12th, the chart gains more than it spends, and that applies to relationships too. A strong 2nd and 7th with a modest 12th is a helpful pattern for a settled married life.

Step 4: use the score for timing

Ashtakavarga also helps with when. When Jupiter or Saturn transits a sign with high SAV points, that period usually goes better than when they cross a low-scoring sign. For marriage:

  1. Find the sign of your 7th house and its SAV score.
  2. Check when Jupiter transits that sign, or aspects it. The years with a high-scoring sign under Jupiter are your stronger windows.
  3. Confirm with your dasha: the period of Venus, the 7th lord or a planet in the 7th house. See Dasha Periods That Bring Marriage.

A worked example

Here is an illustrative chart (not a real person): a Taurus Lagna, so the 7th house is Scorpio.

  • Scorpio has 31 SAV points: strong support for partnership.
  • Venus sits in Pisces with 6 bindus in its own BAV: Venus works well.
  • The 7th lord, Mars, has 3 bindus where it sits: it may delay or test decisions.
  • The 11th house (Pisces) has 30 points and the 12th (Aries) 24: more gain than loss.

Reading: the marriage promise is well supported. Delays, if any, come from the 7th lord's weakness, so the years when Jupiter crosses Scorpio, and the Venus dasha periods, are the windows to watch.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a low score as "no marriage": it isn't. Ashtakavarga shows support and ease, not yes or no.
  • Reading the house from the wrong side: use the 7th house from your Lagna. The calculator lists houses in that order.
  • Ignoring the dasha: a strong 7th house still needs the right period to give results.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Ashtakavarga score for the 7th house? 28 or more Sarvashtakavarga points is above average; 30 or more is strong. Below 25 means the house needs more effort, not that marriage is denied.

Can Ashtakavarga predict the year of marriage? It helps narrow it: years when Jupiter or Saturn crosses a high-scoring 7th house sign tend to be smoother. Combine it with your dasha for the actual window.

Which planet's bindus matter most for marriage? Venus first, then Jupiter and the 7th house lord. Check each planet's bindus in the sign it occupies.

Does a low 7th house score mean a bad marriage? No. It suggests the relationship needs more patience and effort. The rest of the chart, and your own choices, shape the outcome.
