How the vehicle purchase dates are chosen
Each day, from sunrise to the next sunrise, is cut at every change of tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana. A stretch is shown only when all of these hold:
- The Moon in a movable or light nakshatra: Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha or Revati.
- Any day except Tuesday and Saturday.
- A favourable tithi: Tritiya, Panchami, Shashthi, Ashtami, Dashami, Ekadashi or Trayodashi, Purnima in the bright half and Pratipada in the dark half. Dwitiya, Chaturthi, Saptami, Navami, Dwadashi, Chaturdashi and Amavasya are left out.
- A window that opens before 11 PM.
Stretches shorter than five minutes are dropped. All positions use the Lahiri ayanamsa, and times are for the chosen city's sunrise.
Frequently asked questions
What is a muhurat?
A muhurat (muhurta) is a time chosen from the Panchang for starting something important. The classical texts match each kind of event to the nakshatras, weekdays and tithis that suit it, and rule out times such as Vishti karana or a combust Jupiter. The windows here are the stretches of the day where every rule for that event holds.
Why do some windows run past midnight?
A Panchang day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise, not midnight to midnight. A window shown as 2:51 PM to 4:30 AM, Nov 2, is one continuous stretch that ends before the next sunrise.
Are these dates the same for every city?
Nearly. Tithi and nakshatra changes happen at the same moment everywhere in India, but each day starts at the local sunrise, so the first and last windows shift by a few minutes between cities, and now and then a short window appears in one city and not another. Pick your city for its own times.
Do I still need a personal muhurat?
For a wedding, yes: these are the dates that are good for everyone, and a priest or astrologer then narrows them down using the couple's birth charts (Chandra bala, Tara bala and the lagna at the ceremony). For buying a vehicle or moving house, a date from these lists is what most families use.
How were these lists checked?
The rules follow the classical Muhurta texts as the major printed panchangs apply them, and the 2026 New Delhi dates were cross-checked with published panchangs for weddings, griha pravesh, vehicles and property.
