In Vedic astrology your Moon sign, the Chandra Rashi, is your rashi. It's the sign used for your daily and yearly rashifal, for Sade Sati, and for kundli matching. This page explains how to find your Moon sign free, why it can differ from the sign you thought you were, and what each of the twelve Moon signs says about you.
Find your Moon sign now. Enter your date, time and place of birth in the free Kundli calculator. Your Rashi (Moon sign) and Nakshatra appear at the top of the result. No sign-up, and nothing is stored.
How the Moon sign is calculated
The Moon sign is simply the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment of your birth, in the sidereal (Vedic) zodiac. The calculator:
- converts your local birth time to universal time using your birthplace's time zone,
- computes the Moon's exact position in the sky,
- subtracts the ayanamsa (about 24° today; NavAstro uses True Chitra Paksha) to move from the Western to the Vedic zodiac,
- and reads off the sign: every 30° is one sign, from Aries (0–30°) to Pisces (330–360°).
It also gives your nakshatra: the Moon's position in one of 27 lunar mansions of 13°20' each. Your nakshatra decides your Vimshottari dasha sequence and the traditional first letter for a name.
Why the birth time matters for the Moon sign
The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the chart. It changes sign about every 2¼ days, moving roughly 12–15° a day, or about half a degree an hour. So for most people the date alone fixes the Moon sign, but on the day the Moon changes sign, the time decides it.
A real example from NavAstro's calculator (an example birth, not a real person): on 12 August 1994 in Lucknow, the Moon was at 26.3° Virgo at 6:40 am. It crossed into Libra at about 12:50 pm. Someone born that morning is Kanya rashi; someone born that afternoon is Tula. If you don't know your birth time, tick "I don't know my birth time" in the calculator: it uses 12:00 noon, which is right most of the time, but check whether the Moon was near the edge of a sign that day.
Moon sign vs Sun sign vs Lagna
| What it is | Used for | Needs | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moon sign (Rashi) | The Moon's sign at birth | Rashifal, Sade Sati, matching, the mind and emotions | Date (and time, on sign-change days) |
| Sun sign | The Sun's sign at birth | Western horoscopes, the soul and authority | Date only |
| Lagna | The rising sign | The houses, the body and personality | Exact time and place |
Western astrology's "moon sign" is also different from the Vedic one, because it uses the tropical zodiac. For roughly four out of five people the two land in different signs, because the ~24° gap is most of a sign's 30°.
What each Moon sign means
The Moon shows the mind, feelings, and what makes you feel safe:
| Moon sign | Emotional nature |
|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Quick feelings, quick to recover; needs action and independence |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | The Moon's exaltation sign: calm, steady, loyal; needs comfort and security |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Curious and talkative; processes feelings by thinking and discussing |
| Kark (Cancer) | The Moon's own sign: caring, protective, deeply attached to home and family |
| Singh (Leo) | Warm and proud; needs respect and appreciation |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Analytical, careful, helpful; can worry over details |
| Tula (Libra) | Seeks harmony and fairness; feels best in good relationships |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | The Moon's debilitation sign: intense, private, emotionally deep |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Optimistic, idealistic; needs meaning and freedom |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Reserved and practical; shows care through responsibility |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Detached and principled; cares about groups and causes |
| Meen (Pisces) | Sensitive, imaginative, compassionate; absorbs others' moods |
These are tendencies. The Moon's house, nakshatra and the planets with it change the picture a lot.

- Transits (gochar): the effects of moving planets are judged by the house they occupy counted from the Moon.
- Names: a child's name traditionally starts with a syllable from the Moon's nakshatra. See Newborn Baby Kundali.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my Moon sign for free? Enter your date, time and place of birth in a Vedic kundli calculator. NavAstro's Kundli calculator shows it as "Rashi" at the top of the result.
Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time? Usually yes. The Moon stays in one sign for about 2¼ days, so unless you were born on a day it changed sign, the date is enough.
Is Rashi the same as Moon sign? Yes. In Vedic astrology "rashi" on its own means the Moon sign.
Why is my Vedic Moon sign different from my Western one? Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is currently about 24° behind the tropical zodiac used in the West.
