The eastern cities see the Moon first (Kolkata 7:47 PM) and the western ones last (Mumbai 9:01 PM). If your city isn't listed, use the nearest one: within about 100 km the difference is usually under five minutes.
Why you may see the Moon a little later: the time above is when the Moon crosses the horizon. Buildings, trees, haze or clouds can hide it for another 10–20 minutes, especially in big cities. That's normal; the fast is broken when the Moon is actually seen.
The Moon on Karwa Chauth 2026
At moonrise this year the Moon is in Vrishabh (Taurus), its sign of exaltation, in Mrigashira nakshatra. In Vedic astrology an exalted Moon is at its brightest and most nourishing: a fitting sky for a fast dedicated to the Moon and a long, happy married life. The panchang yoga for most of the day is Parigha.
How the evening goes
- Before sunrise (sargi): the meal from the mother-in-law, eaten before the fast begins.
- During the day: a nirjala fast (no food or water) in most North Indian families; some keep a phalahari fast for health reasons.
- Puja muhurat (5:38–6:56 PM in Delhi): Karwa Mata, Lord Shiva, Parvati, Ganesh and Kartikeya are worshipped, the Karwa Chauth katha is heard, and the karwas are exchanged.
- At moonrise: the Moon is seen through a sieve, arghya is offered, then the husband's face is seen through the same sieve, and he offers the first sip of water and bite of food.
